Often, the title “teacher” is one we attribute to those working in elementary and secondary schools. We often recall our favorite classes from our formative teachers. As we grow up, we begin thinking of higher education teachers with the hefty title of “professor.” Nonetheless, these outstanding teachers all contribute to the same goal: grow the minds of our youth.
In this post, we highlight higher education teachers from a variety of colleges and universities. It is educators like these who have truly excelled in their careers to bring the entire profession to the next level.
The following professors are recognized as both national and international experts. Many are contributing to various causes, including instructing future outstanding teachers. Others are shaping new, adaptable education programs to develop the profession as a whole to its highest potential. These outstanding teachers are truly inspirational. Furthermore, their work helps many fulfill the passion to mold future generations. In each of the brief biographies below, you will learn about the professor’s interests and expertise.

International Education: Pauline Rose, Ph.D.
Pauline Rose is an International Education professor at the University of Cambridge. She currently teaches philosophy to graduate students in the Education, Globalisation and International Development department and serves as the director of the Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre. She makes the outstanding teacher list for her contribution to equalizing international education.
Having earned her Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Development Economics at the University of London, it is not a surprise that her research interests revolve around education in developing nations. Rose went on to earn her philosophical doctorate (Ph.D.) in Development Studies at the University of Sussex. Before 2014, Rose worked at the Education For All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report as both a senior policy analyst and director.
Rose’s research is diverse with focuses on educational inequality, international education policies, and academic opportunities for the marginalized. She also engages in analyzing the role of providers in education. Additionally, she studies the issues of educational inequality resulting from poverty and gender statuses. Ultimately, her work contributes to an international understanding of where we in the race to create educational opportunities for all.
Regarding notable publications, Rose’s list is quite long. She is an author of many peer-reviewed articles and has developed research in the field since 2003.
Also of note are Rose’s professional associations. Rose is a member of the United Kingdom Forum for International Education and Training (UKFIET). She is also a member of the Executive Committee for the Forum. Additionally, Rose is a member of the Steering Committee for the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) Girls’ Education Challenge Fund. She is a Senior Research Fellow on educational policy and practice, too, within DFI.

Inclusive Education: Carl James, Ph.D.
Carl James currently holds the position of the Jean Augustine Chair in Community, Education, and Diaspora at York University in Toronto, Canada. This is also where he earned his Ph.D. He then quickly began his teaching career in 1993. He is currently a supervisor of graduate students. His efforts in inclusive education make him an outstanding teacher.
As a community leader, James has a lot of experience in the analysis of systemic policies. He is also well-versed in action research and critical ethnography. James collaborates with Swedish educators from Södertörn University and Uppsala University on these interests.
His research areas include inclusive, urban, and community education, and social justice. James is also the sole author of several works and is an active researcher in these areas. He is published in several journals and handbooks.
Throughout his career, James has participated in various research projects as an investigator. He is a member of the board of the Journal of Critical Race Inquiry and is also professionally associated with the Journal of Contemporary Issues in Education. He is a recipient of the Uppsala University Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, awarded in 2006. Additionally, in 2009, James was awarded the African Canadian Achievement Award by Pride News Magazine.

Outstanding Teacher Development: Glen A. Jones, Ph.D.
Glen Jones is currently a professor with the University of Toronto in Canada. He is also the Dean of the university’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). Jones got both a bachelor of arts (B.A.) and a bachelor of education (B.Ed.) at the University of Manitoba in Canada. He continued to the University of Toronto to earn a master of education degree (M.Ed.) and Ph.D. His commitment to furthering educational policy and research makes him an outstanding teacher.
When it comes to academic positions, Jones has a long history. He began his career as an associate member of the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto but soon moved to Brock University. Beyond these accomplishments, Jones serves as the Ontario research chair in postsecondary education management. Jones is also a visiting Honorary Professor at the Beijing Normal University in China.
Jones is also a member of the organizing committee of the Annual Worldviews Lecture on Higher Education and Media. In addition, he has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Higher Education Academic Matters for more than a decade.
Furthermore, Jones is a well-published author. He has written many books, including recent works Universities and Regional Development: A Critical Assessment of Tensions and Contradictions (2012) and Higher Education in Canada: Different Perspectives and Different System (1997).

Math Education: Jo Boaler, Ph.D.
Jo Boaler is a professor at the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University in California. She started with a bachelor of science (B.Sc.) degree in psychology from The University of Liverpool in England. She then moved to the University of London to earn both an M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics education. Upon completing her education, Boaler became a Marie Curie Professor at the University of Sussex. Her time there was followed by a stint at King’s College London as a lecturer, proving her standing as an outstanding teacher.
Boaler’s career at Stanford began in 1998 when she became an assistant professor. She gained permanent status in 2010. Boaler currently teaches topics in mathematics education on learning and researching the material.
Her research interests include educator development, mathematics education, mathematical problem solving, educational equity, and diversity. Boaler’s most recent research is focused on the effectiveness of math games and device applications. She also participates in research on the impact of online education on learning and teaching.
Boaler’s contribution to the field as an author includes several books and numerous journal articles. Perhaps most known is her 2015 book What’s Math Got to Do with It?. She is also the sole author of Mathematical Mindpress (2016) and Multiple Perspectives on Mathematics Teaching and Learning (2000).

Special Education: Timothy J. Lewis, Ph.D.
Timothy J. Lewis is a Special Education professor at the University of Missouri. Having started at Mizzou in 2003, he gained extensive professorial experience elsewhere after completing a Ph.D. in 1990. He is also the director of the university’s Center for School-Wide Positive Behavior Support. His efforts in teaching children with special needs make him an outstanding teacher.
Lewis started as a teacher at the Special School District of St. Louis County, where he worked for three years. During his Ph.D. studies at the University of Oregon, he worked as an instructor and assistant professor in the special education department. Lewis later transferred to the University of Missouri as an associate professor, then moved into his current position.
Lewis has earned three degrees. He obtained a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Special Education from the University of Missouri. His Ph.D. in Special Education is from the University of Oregon. He has more than 30 years of experience in his field.
Lewis is currently part of several professional affiliations. He is a member of the Association for Positive Behavior Support, Council for Exceptional Children, and Society for Applied Behavior Analysis. Moreover, Lewis serves as the Co-Director of the national Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Center for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. His affiliations add to his expertise within behavior disorders, developmental disabilities, and positive behavior supports.
Furthermore, Lewis is a published author. Of note, he is the author of several books. In 2008, he released Implementing Positive Behavior Support Systems in Early Childhood and Elementary Settings Published with Corwin Press.

Outstanding Teacher Education: Mary Clement, Ed.D.
Mary Clement is a professor of teacher education at Berry College, a private university in the state of Georgia. She began at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she received a B.A. She proceeded to Illinois State University for her M.A. before returning to her alma mater to complete her Ed.D. For her work in this area, she is an outstanding teacher.
Clement started as a high school teacher in 1979. After eight years, she became a teaching assistant at Illinois State University. She then continued to the University of Illinois to serve as a supervisor of student teachers. Additionally, Eastern Illinois University employed her as a coordinator and administrator of the Beginning Teacher Program. It was in 1997 that Clement moved to her current post.
Of note, Clement served as the international president of the honor society Kappa Delta Pi from 2012 to 2014. She is also affiliated with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). Additionally, she is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, which promotes the growth of female educators professionally and personally. Clement is also in Phi Delta Kappa, an international organization that supports educators in strengthening their investments in the profession.
With more than 10 books and 140 articles under her belt, Clement is the author of several titles, including 10 Steps for Hiring Effective Teachers (2015) and Get a Teaching Job NOW: A Step-by-Step Guide (2013).
Her teaching interests include methods of foreign language teaching, secondary subjects and methods, as well as foundations of psychology and education. As for research interests, Clement is currently focused on the hiring and induction of primary through secondary (K-12) teachers.

Teaching Childhood Development: Mojdeh Bayat, Ph.D.
Mojdeh Bayat teaches at the College of Education at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. She specializes in early childhood development focusing on children with autism. This outstanding teacher has made amazing contributions to behavior education.
Bayat acquired her B.A. from American University in Washington, DC. She moved to Chicago to earn an M.A. with Distinction in Early Childhood Special Education from Northeastern Illinois University. Bayat then obtained her Ph.D. from the Erikson Institute in Chicago, a renowned graduate school for early education scholarship.
Throughout her career, Bayat has published several books. The most recent works include Teaching exceptional children: Best practices and foundations in inclusive early childhood classrooms (2017) and Addressing challenging behaviors and mental health issues in early childhood (2015).
She is also the author of the Resilience-based Interaction Model (RIM). Furthermore, she is currently a member of the university’s Institutional Review Board and Faculty Council Hearing Committee. Additionally, she is part of theWorld Association for Infant Mental Health and Council for Exceptional Children.
In addition to teaching, Bayat designs courses for her department. Of note, she is the 2017 recipient of DePaul University’s Woman of Spirit and Action Award. She is also the 2008 awardee for advisement of the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Behavioral Management: James M. Benshoff, Ph.D.
James Benshoff is currently a professor of counselor education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is well-established in his field. His commitment to training other educators is just one reason he is an outstanding teacher.
His professional career started with Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools as an English subject and special education teacher. He was also a behavior management specialist with the Arlington Community Services Board. Additionally, he was Deputy Director of Professional Development and Research at the American Counseling Association. Prior to his work at UNC, Benshoff served as a lecturer and assistant professor at George Mason University in Virginia.
He received his B.A. in English from William & Mary, a private college in Virginia. His M.Ed. was in Counseling and Development from George Mason University, and he obtained a Ph.D. in the same subject area from American University in 1988.
Benshoff is the co-author of numerous publications. His research interests include leadership theory, group education, counseling, peer and clinical supervision, and online teaching. In addition to publishing written materials in these topics, Benshoff produces instructional videos.
Benshoff serves on numerous review boards and is a current member of the North Carolina and American Counseling Associations. He is also the 2013 recipient of the Professional Leadership Award from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES).

Training Outstanding Teachers: John M. Reveles, Ph.D.
John Reveles is a professor of Elementary Education at California State University, Northridge. He became a faculty member in 2004 after completing his Ph.D. in Science Education at UC Santa Barbara. Of note, during his doctoral work, Reveles collaborated on the development of the Center for Equity in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) project.
Reveles obtained his B.A. in Social Work from Colorado State University. He also holds an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. For his Ph.D. dissertation, he studied the effect of science education on “science students” who lacked traditional science backgrounds. He also looked at the impact this identity had on their ability to learn and retain grade-level science. Ultimately, he discussed the impact of identity on science literacy.
Currently, Reveles teaches teachers. As an outstanding teacher within his own field, and as someone who aims to make positive strides within the field of education, he works with numerous communities. In a partnership with UC Berkeley, CSU Northridge and the Compton Unified School District (near Los Angeles), Reveles and his team are working to increase the retention rates of teachers. Specifically, the project aims to help the school district retain male teachers of color. This work not only works to help train teachers and prepare them for the trials in the classroom but to also improve upon a social issue.
In addition to this project, Reveles has other research interests and publications. He continues to work toward developing elementary scientific literacy and equity in science education. Also, he studies the impact of sociocultural influences and identities on students’ academic self-identification.

Equality in Education: Travis J. Bristol, Ph.D.
Travis Bristol is currently an assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley. His body of work in critical studies on race, gender, class and their intersection with education is comprehensive. It includes publications, guest lectures, elite presentations and community collaborations. Moreover, he holds several awards and recognitions for his work. He demonstrates great qualities of an outstanding teacher.
Bristol earned his A.B. at Amherst College. He went on to Stanford University to obtain his M.A. Finally, he completed his Ph.D. Columbia University, demonstrating his own elite education and success in the field. After obtaining his doctorate, he worked at Boston University as a Peter Paul Assistant Professor, where he began his extensive academic career. Additionally, he was a teacher educator for the Boston Teacher Residency program.
Ultimately, Bristol’s research highlights the delicate intersection of educational practice and policy. He evaluates both school- and district-based practices designed to support and retain educators of color. Moreover, he researches education policies at the local, state and national levels that enable or constrain the experiences of these educators in their workplaces. In this arena, Bristol’s work aims to overcome constraints in favor of programs that support the retention of marginalized teachers. Lastly, his research dissects the intersection of gender and race within school settings.
Bristol is also well-published. His work can be found in The American Educational Research Journal, Journal of Teacher Education, and Urban Education. Bristol is also the recipient of several awards. His collection includes the 2019 Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, the 2015 Teacher Diversity Research Award from American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the 2013 American Educational Research Association Minority Dissertation Fellowship. Bristol initially received the 2002 Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color.
